It’s a known fact that we all need food to survive, and what better way to enjoy it than eating with someone you care about? While food not only helps people communicate, but for some, it can be seen as a way to bring people together. Whether it’s your mom cutting fruit for you while you’re studying, your friends buying your favorite cake for your birthday, or sharing a KitKat with someone, food is a universal language.
This is very true at a school where the majority are in culinary/baking labs for six hours at a time with the same people. You’re not only able to make a connection with the people you work with to create something delicious, or disastrous, but you get to connect over your shared experiences over what went well, and what didn’t. This can also be seen in the dining hall, corners of the library, and out on the grass. People eating together, sharing moments together, and just being together sharing a meal.
This is what makes Johnson and Wales such a welcoming and connected school. The fact that so many people are able to come together over a shared love for food, whether it’s bread, sandwiches, or even lobster, most likely someone will have something to say about it at JWU. This in-turn not only helps bring people together over the shared interest, but helps people get to know one another more, and even make a life-long friend.
When things feel overwhelming, or you just need a break, I recommend going to get a meal with someone you care about. Not only could the meal help you feel more energized and less stuck, but eating with someone and connecting will help you see the bigger picture, that we’re all going through it, together.
