During the holiday weekend, families enjoyed heaps of food consisting of golden turkeys, creamy mashed potatoes, spiced cranberry sauce, and pies of every flavor. Yet, with all this food around the table, to a vegetarian, there may not be as many options to enjoy as one may hope. Here are some ways to still enjoy the holiday weekend, for next year's Thanksgiving, or this upcoming holiday season!
While the main dish usually consists of some sort of meat, whether it’s turkey or ham, there’s still many other dishes to enjoy that aren’t meat options. This can include mashed potatoes, sweet potato mash, mac ‘n’ cheese, green bean casserole, and even that spiced cranberry sauce. This list isn’t even including the wonderful pies/desserts that are included within the holiday meal!
Another option could be bringing a dish you know and love, in order to not only add to the dishes that you’ll be able to enjoy, but to also spread your love of the dish with family and friends as well. Maybe this dish will become a tradition just like your grandma’s mashed potatoes, or your aunt’s pumpkin pie!
One last tip, that I feel is the most important, is to be open with your family and friends about your concerns for the upcoming meal. While it can be hard to voice your concerns, I’m sure that these people would want you to enjoy the holiday just as much as them. Even if it means making a few more dishes so that you feel included, because when you think about it, what’s a holiday if not everyone is together enjoying delicious food together?
