2024 Emmy's

In the age of streaming, the ritual of TV shows is more elusive as consumers no longer need to be in a certain place at a certain time to enjoy them. When it came to the Emmys, streaming platforms were the routine winners. With shows like The Bear (on Hulu, owned by Disney) and Beef (on Netflix) winning a majority of the awards, there is a noticeable shift in the method of viewing TV shows. Cable television is almost nonexistent while platforms like Netflix are thriving, as evidenced by the popularity of streaming originals like those previously mentioned.

For those of you who didn’t watch the Emmys on January 15th at 8 in the evening (or didn’t want to sit through the speeches), here’s a summary of the winners and their respective categories:

  • Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series - Quinta Brunson, Abbot Elementary
  • Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series - Jeremy Allen White, The Bear
  • Outstanding Scripted Variety Series - Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
  • Outstanding Reality Competition Series - RuPaul’s Drag Race
  • Outstanding Talk Series - The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
  • Best Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie - Steven Yeun, Beef
  • Best Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie - Ali Wong, Beef
  • Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series - Beef
  • Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series - Kieran Culkin, Succession
  • Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series - Sarah Snook, Succession
  • Outstanding Comedy Series - The Bear
  • Outstanding Drama Series - Succession

Throughout the show, there was much discussion about diversity within the industry and wider society; the winners of this year reflected this diversity, which is a change from years past when the majority of winners were white. A moment of note is when Jennifer Coolidge thanked, “. . . all the evil gays,” after winning Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Hosted by Anthony Anderson, this award show was entertaining and genuinely funny without trying too hard. The tributes and reunions of older television shows was a great call back to the shows that made today’s and the rendition of “See You Again” by Charlie Puth and The War and Treaty was beautiful, although I believe the song itself is overplayed. All in all, the Emmys shaped up to be one of the better award shows I’ve seen in a while.
