2024 Golden Globes

On January 7, one of Hollywood’s highly anticipated events, the 81st Golden Globes, took place live from Beverly Hills. According to CBS, an estimated 9.4 million viewers tuned in to watch American and International film and television professionals get recognized for their work. Celebrities like Taylor Swift, Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo Di Caprio, and Jennifer Lopez attended the event. The evening was filled with unforgettable moments, heartfelt speeches, and exceptional talent across various categories. Let’s rewind time for a Golden Globes recap, highlighting some of the best moments from this star-studded night. 

Hosted by comedian Jo Koy, the evening didn’t go as planned when Koy’s opening monologue failed to impress. Guests and viewers were left upset by some of the comedian’s jokes including one targeting Taylor Swift and the “Barbie” movie, resulting in major backlash on social media. In a post-show interview with Good Morning America, Koy admitted the evening didn’t go as he planned but was thankful for the opportunity. In terms of nominations, the films “Oppenheimer”, “Killers of the Flower Moon”, “Succession”, and “Barbie” were top contenders. “Barbie” entered the night with nine nominations, tied with the 1972 film “Cabaret” as the second-most nominated movie or TV show in history. Robert Altman’s “Nashville” holds the record with 11 total nominations.

As for the results, some were left shocked while others made history. Despite all of Barbie’s nominations, the film only left with one award, the cinematic and box office achievement. Other winners include “Oppenheimer” winning Best Drama Motion Picture, Billie Eilish and FINNEAS winning Best Original Song “What Was I Made For?”, Christopher Nolan winning Best Director of a Motion Picture, Robert Downey Jr. winning Best Supporting Actor and Lily Gladstone making history as the first indigenous actor to win Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon. Succession led the films with four total awards. TV shows “The Bears” and “Beef” also received multiple nominations, with both shows winning three Golden Globe awards each. “The Bears” surprised many by winning Best Comedy as it was considered a drama. 

Filled with light-hearted humor and unexpected twists, the 2024 Golden Globes did not disappoint. From teary-eyed Greta Gerwig, watching Billie Eilish and FINNEAS take home the award for Best Original Song to the supportive Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lawrence cheering on Emma Stone after her win for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, the show accompanied many great moments. Adding to the night was Cillian Murphy sported lipstick on his nose following his victory for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Motion Picture and the cast of “Suits” reuniting to present the award for Best Drama Series after the show regained traction on Netflix. As the stars left, the evening became a part of entertainment history, leaving a lasting impression on viewers worldwide. The long wait for the 2025 Golden Globes has begun and expectations have heighted.
