Best for YOU
Ava Zajczenko, Food Section Head
While everyone may be using the phrase, “new year, new me,” it doesn’t have to apply to every aspect of our life, including food. While it may be tempting to spend extra hours in the gym, and participate in the new diet culture that is going around, it’s also important to nourish our bodies, and to eat the foods that make us feel good. Here’s some tips to avoid toxic diet culture this new year:
1.Don’t Compare your New Year to Everyone Else’s
While it may seem like everyone is the most fit and healthy that they’ve ever been, you can’t always take what you see as a fact. You never know who may be struggling with their body, and the diet culture that is circling this time of year. So instead of focusing on everyone else, focus on you, and do what makes you feel good!
2.Avoid Negative Media
It’s hard to avoid people's toxic diet culture in a time with social media that is always circulating the newest trends. Instead of sitting on social media watching video after video about the topic, try to limit time on those apps, and instead make time for yourself. Try to do something that makes you feel good about yourself, even if it’s something small.
3.Avoid Negative Self Talk
At this time of year, it can feel like you need to change yourself completely, and when we’re not doing that, it may seem like we’ve failed our new goals. In reality, it takes time to not only create healthy new goals, but to also execute them. While it’s easy to beat yourself up over not having your goal body, or not doing your best with the meals you’re eating, talking negatively to yourself will only make you feel worse. Remember, progress takes time, and talking about yourself in a positive way could really make a difference in achieving your new goals.
