Black history, Valentine's Day on television, and The NFL were all topics for an event held by JWU Providence Student Engagement. The event was a trivia night that took place on February 5 as part of a recurring event program. The trivia was held in the Friedman Center lounge and was free to attend. The goal of the event was to provide an engaging activity that allowed students to get involved with the JWU student community.
The event started at 8 p.m., and students who participated could choose seating from a variety of comfortable options. Once all participants were seated, there was a QR code that they scanned to join the trivia through a website. The questions appeared on each person's phone screen were also read aloud by a very friendly employee at the Student Engagement Center. When the topic changed, there was a noticeable shift on the leaderboard, and people who knew the answers to one category seemed to struggle more with others.
There were 60 questions asked during the game. One interesting question was, “Which European capital hosted the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in which Jesse Owens won four gold medals?”. The answer to that question was Berlin. Throughout the games, there were multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank questions. The fill-in-the-blanks were the questions that seemed to stump most people.
The energy of the events was fun and light. It was definitely a good opportunity for students to get to do something fun that night. When I interviewed a student named Cora Welch, she said she seemed to really enjoy it. One question I asked her was what her favorite part of the event was, and she said, “Being able to spend time with other people”. The event was definitely well received by the people who attended. Another upcoming trivia night will be on February 26.
