Cupcake Wars

When people think of Johnson & Wales, they often think of the renowned culinary or baking programs offered here at JWU. Well, on Friday, April 5, the University Involvement Board hosted an event called Cupcake Wars, where students could put their cupcake-decorating skills to the test. Something exciting to note is that this event was open and free for all students to participate, regardless of their major. The only requirement was that one student from each team have some experience working in labs.

The event was held in the lobby of the CCCE building and was scheduled to run from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.; however, the event did end due to the teams using less than the allotted time. The teams were provided cupcakes as well as frosting, sprinkles, ice cream cones, piping bags, and tons of other supplies and ingredients. Each team was made of 3-5 students, and each team worked together to create cupcake designs that fit the theme. The theme that was given was seasons. As you can see in the images, some teams created cupcake cakes by putting multiple cupcakes together in order to create a bigger canvas, and others used individual cupcakes to create their designs.

After the teams finished decorating, the judges scored each team based on a rubric that included objectives like design, cleanliness of the table, creativity, and more. The team that won first place was Team Culinary, second place was Team Hospitality, third place was Team Amateurs, and fourth place was Team Cupcake Caterers.

Each team that completed it was given a prize in the form of gift cards, and each team's total prize, the dollar amount, was divided evenly among the number of team members. Congratulations to all the teams who competed, and a big shout out to the University Involvement Board for putting this event together.
