One of the best parts about going to the Johnson & Wales Providence campus, is the access to the events right in our own backyard. One of the great options is to go to a Providence Bruins Hockey game. Most students here at JWU are native to the New England region, meaning you likely support the Boston Bruins. This live sporting event, at a low cost, is a great weekend activity, even for those of you that don’t like hockey. I’m personally a huge hockey fan and have always said that it is most appreciated when seen live.
Home games for the Providence Bruins are located in the Amica Mutual Pavilion, which is just an 8-10 minute walk from the Down City campus of JWU. They occur only on Friday-Sunday at a variety of times. I personally went to a 3:05pm game on a Sunday, giving us time to get dinner afterwards and enjoy the day beforehand.
The intermission shows had a connection to the local community. through kids hockey programs. During each of the 2 intermissions of the game, 2 local youth hockey teams played on short game for the crowd. This local community engagement is just an added plus to the fun event.
Tickets for games in April start as low as $20 and reach up to a high of $39.75. These tickets are affordable no matter where in the stadium you would like to sit. And there are constant deals available for even cheaper ticket options. The games are fun and not overly crowded, while still having an active crowd environment and really created that Pro-Sport feeling.
Of course, just as is expected of any live sporting event, the food and drink prices are overdone. At my game they were out of pretzels through the whole stadium by halfway through and the lines were not ridiculous. There are separate vendors that sell only drinks to reduce the lines for food, along with having lots of workers directing the traffic. In general, being able to take advantage of our walkable city and active community is always a great way to get your mind out of school or work and enjoy a break on the weekends.
