SGA Meeting March 27th

Last Wednesday, March 27, in the Wildcat Lounge, the third to last SGA Senate meeting was called to order with an interesting agenda. After the initial roll call and approval of the prior meeting minutes, the Senate was presented with a project from Professor Villari that proved to be quite unique in its embodiment of school spirit and student focus.

For those of you who did not know, the city of Providence has worked with an organization called The Avenue Project which works to install public works of art around the city aimed at reducing vandalism and generally providing more of a sense of community within the city’s limits. These pieces of art are none other than the murals scattered on buildings throughout Providence.

The project proposed by Villari does something similar. In his perspective, there is no celebration of our university’s founders, Gertrude I. Johnson and Mary T. Wales; their likenesses are nearly impossible to find anywhere on campus if they exist. So, through partnership with students in a DEE (Directed Experiential Education), concept art was created which depicted our founders in a mural on the Remmington building behind McNulty. The project was presented to the SGA because it not only needs funding but also student support. Executive board members and senators all agreed on the project’s importance; a resolution is to be drafted demonstrating their support.

Once the presentation was over, board members went over reports from the week and reminded those in the audience about the Passing of the Gavel on the 18th. With their final meeting called on the 3rd, the one recurring theme is the need for student engagement. In the upcoming semester, students are encouraged to attend meetings, vote during elections, and/or perhaps even run for office themselves. There’s no one way to voice one’s opinion.
