JWU Athletics Weekly Roundup: Nov. 15–21

The third week of November marked the closing of fall sports, with the Women’s Volleyball GNAC Final and Women’s Cross Country NCAA Mideast Regionals. In its stead came the winter sports season, with wrestling matches, basketball games, and hockey games all in the spotlight.

Friday, November 15:

Men’s Hockey was up first, but unfortunately, their strong run of form to start the regular season came to a fault against Wentworth, with the final score standing 2–5 after three periods. Luckily, they had a shot at redemption against Wentworth the following day.

Like the Men’s team, Women’s Hockey ended a two-win streak to start the regular season with a loss, shut out by Suffolk 0–4, with a second match set for the following day.

Saturday, November 16:

In their second match versus Wentworth, JWU’s Men’s Hockey squad claimed a 6–1 victory, minimizing the damage their first loss will do to their spot in the regular season standings.

JWU’s Women’s Hockey team also scored a victory after a tough opening act, defeating Suffolk 5–1.

Despite sending only four student-athletes and therefore not qualifying the school for overall placement, Women’s Cross Country did their due diligence against steep competition, placing as high as 126th out of 182 runners.

JWU’s Wrestlers captured two wins against RIT and Southern Maine, outsourcing each school 36–7 and 32–13, respectively.

In the GNAC Championship Final, JWU’s Women’s Volleyball team lost against Lasell in all three sets of play (25–18, 25–19, 25–13). This leaves their 2024 campaign with a 21–12 record, marking a great run of form all season to earn a spot to fight for the championship.

Women’s Basketball takes another non-championship victory to start their Winter 2024 season, beating Mt. Saint Vincent 86–72. The Wildcats took their strong start to their next non-championship match against Brown on November 19.

Sunday, November 17:

Like the women’s team, JWU’s Men’s Basketball competed in a non-competitive match, only instead playing against Eastern Connecticut State. Unfortunately, the Wildcats would lose 39–53, failing to match their competitor’s run of form, which included three student-athletes scoring in the double digits.

Tuesday, November 19:

Women’s Basketball had their exhibition match versus Brown, losing against the Ivy League school 47–104.
